Thermodynamic Diffusers automatically adjust the direction of the air jet based on the supplied air temperature. In large rooms with high ceilings, a lot of energy is wasted in heating because of the buoyancy effect causing hot air to rise and stick to the ceiling. By adjusting the direction of the air jet to compensate for the buoyancy effect, we can simultaneously save energy, improve thermal comfort and indoor air quality. EffectiV HVAC’s Thermodynamic Diffusers use thermo-reactive elements like metal springs or wax pistons, which expand or contract based on the temperature of the air coming from the duct and passing through the diffuser. They do not require any electricity and controls, nor any special configuration or maintenance. They are fully autonomous and can be installed like standard diffusers. An advanced Computer Fluid Dynamics study was conducted in 2020 comparing thermodynamic diffusers with standard diffusers and destratification fans in a restaurant with open ceilings and diffusers installed at a 16 foot height. The conclusion was that Thermodynamic Diffusers offered 43% energy savings in winter months averaging -10⁰C outside temperature, while improving thermal comfort and air mixing in the occupied space. An economical analysis showed a return on investment in 2.2 months or less.
